About Rozanne
How do you pay tribute to an educator who epitomized grace, and whose ferocious support for Wenatchee's children and the arts was surpassed only by her modesty and cheerful good will? The people who loved long-time educator and Beauty of Bronze coordinator Rozanne Lind want to honor her many contributions by bringing a graceful bronze sculpture to Wenatchee of two clasped hands, dedicated to Lind and her passions—her students, art and the community she served The sculpture, titled "Rozanne's Tango," will stand 7 feet tall—a sculpture of a man's hand intertwined with a woman's, standing 4 feet tall, mounted on a 3-foot tall base. It is a larger version of a 7-inch-tall maquette, or study, called "Tango" created by Kevin Pettelle, the Sultan artist who has always worked with Art on the Avenues' Beauty of Bronze (BOB) program. Rozanne long admired Kevin's work, but the "Tango" maquette had special significance because her beloved husband Pete bought it for her as a gift before he died from pancreatic cancer in 2016. Just three years later cancer struck again and took Rozanne far too quickly. on July 7, 2019. We want to bring "Rozanne's Tango" to Wenatchee to honor Rozanne's gentle nature and resolve of steel that helped make the BOB program a reality. Wenatchee has received a vast collection of sculpture—more than 80 pieces—thanks to Art on the Avenues, a non-profit 501 (c)(3) group created by Adele Wolford, Allison Williams and other volunteers in 1994. The goal was simple, to ask artists to lend their sculptures for public exhibition in Wenatchee for a year, and then sell as many pieces from the exhibit as possible. As the collection grew, AOTA looked for ways to build awareness of the art in our community, and appreciation for art in general. In 2004, it introduced an art program for fifth graders called the Beauty of Bronze (BOB). But as coordinator and creator Jeanette Marantos soon learned, over-burdened teachers are wary of new, untested programs. Not so Rozanne, a well-respected enrichment teacher at Columbia and John Newbery elementary schools. She immediately embraced the program, added ideas and lessons to improve its classroom components and became BOB's biggest champion. Because of her enthusiasm and encouragement, the three 5th-grade teachers at Columbia Elementary School agreed to be the first BOB guinea pigs. Within a few years the BOB program grew to include all of the fifth graders at Wenatchee's seven elementary schools as well as The Valley Academy of Learning, for home-schooled fifth graders, and the River Academy private school, and Rozanne's involvement in the program only deepened.
